The technical description of a gemstone is a "naturally occurring crystalline form of a mineral", but we all know gemstones mean a lot more than that.  They tell us about a specific moment in time and inform us about a culture. Gemstones have been desired for their beauty, rarity, and status practically since the beginning of time: diamond, sapphire, ruby, and emerald especially. Perhaps a more apt way of describing a precious stone, then, is as "... a small, rare, hard stone which has inherited from Nature the name of beautiful."
